An EZTow autonomous tow tractor has been deployed at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) to support cargo and baggage handling operations in a live airport environment.

Operational use in mixed traffic

The autonomous vehicle is operating on a one-mile route in mixed traffic conditions. Initially tasked with transporting cargo between aircraft and a designated staging area, the scope has extended to include baggage handling for Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines.

Baggage is autonomously transferred from arrival gates to the baggage claim area, reducing manual GSE requirements and improving process consistency.

Collaborative deployment

This deployment is the result of a partnership between GSP, Piedmont Airlines, and TractEasy. It is aimed at evaluating the integration of autonomous vehicles within existing airside logistics workflows. The EZTow’s ability to safely operate in a dynamic airport setting underscores its readiness for full-scale deployment.

Technology and capacity

Manufactured by TLD and equipped with EasyMile’s autonomous driving software, the EZTow navigates with high precision using lidar, cameras, GPS, and connectivity systems. Its deployment at GSP aligns with similar use cases at Changi Airport (Singapore) and Narita International Airport (Japan), where autonomous towing has already been integrated into routine operations.

This pilot supports GSP’s broader goal of enhancing operational efficiency through automation, with results expected to inform long-term adoption strategies.
